Face Oil 101: How to Use It, Who It’s For & What It Actually Does

5 min read

Face oils have become a staple in many skincare routines, but there’s still plenty of confusion around them.

Does facial oil actually hydrate your skin? Can you use one if your skin is already oily? Does it go before or after moisturizer? And perhaps the biggest question: will putting oil on your face cause breakouts?

The answer depends largely on the formula, the oils being used, and how you incorporate them into your routine.

Here are the questions worth answering before adding a face oil to your skincare shelf.

Do face oils actually hydrate the skin?

Face oils can help skin retain moisture, but they work differently from water-based hydrating ingredients.

Think of hydration and moisture retention as two parts of the same routine. Water-based products help provide hydration, while facial oils help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss by supporting its protective lipid barrier.

That’s one reason face oil often feels especially good on skin that is dry, tight, dull, or exposed to air conditioning, sun, wind, or other environmental stressors.

For the best results, don't wait until your skin is completely dry. Apply your oil after your hydrating skincare or while the skin still has a little moisture.

Can oily or acne-prone skin use face oil?

Yes, but the type of oil matters far more than the word “oil.”

Oily skin doesn't necessarily need a heavy product. In fact, some botanical oils have surprisingly lightweight textures and absorb quickly when they're properly formulated.

The bigger issue is choosing a facial oil that works with your skin rather than simply coating it.

If you're acne-prone, start slowly. Use only a few drops and pay attention to how your skin responds. More oil isn't more effective.

Golden Phae Restorative Face Oil Plus was created as a lightweight botanical oil blend rather than a heavy, greasy layer. It combines oils such as Sea Buckthorn and Japanese Camellia with other plant-based ingredients chosen to nourish and condition the skin.

Should face oil go before or after moisturizer?

n most routines, face oil goes after moisturizer.

A simple routine might look like:

Cleanser → hydrating serum or treatment → moisturizer → face oil

Your moisturizer delivers water-based hydration and other ingredients to the skin. Applying a few drops of facial oil afterward can help seal in that moisture and leave the skin feeling softer and more comfortable.

There is one exception: if you're using face oil on its own, apply it to slightly damp skin rather than completely dry skin.

Can face oil replace moisturizer?

Sometimes, but they aren't interchangeable.

If your skin already feels balanced and comfortable, you may enjoy using a facial oil alone, particularly during warmer or more humid weather.

Dry or dehydrated skin will often benefit more from using both moisturizer and oil.

Golden Phae's approach is not about building a ten-step skincare routine. It's about choosing products that have a purpose. Our Restorative Day & Night Moisturizer provides daily moisture, while Restorative Face Oil Plus can be layered over it when your skin needs additional nourishment and moisture retention.

You can also adjust the combination according to your skin and the season.

Why does my face oil just sit on top of my skin?

If your face looks slick long after application, your skin may not be the problem.

You may simply be using too much.

A good face oil isn't meant to leave your face drenched. Start with just a few drops, warm them between your fingertips and gently press the oil into the skin.

Another common mistake is applying oil over layers of products that haven't absorbed yet. Give your serum or moisturizer a moment to settle before adding oil.

The goal is soft, comfortable, nourished skin — not an oily film.

Do face oils cause breakouts or milia?

They can, but not every facial oil will.

Breakouts can depend on the individual oils, the overall formulation, how much you're applying and, most importantly, your own skin.

This is also why “natural” shouldn't automatically be interpreted as “perfect for everyone.” Even beautiful botanical ingredients may not agree with every complexion.

Introduce a new face oil gradually and patch test if your skin is particularly reactive. If you're prone to milia around the eyes, avoid applying a heavy layer too close to that area.

And if a product consistently causes congestion, stop using it. Skincare isn't something your skin needs to “push through.”

Can you wear face oil during the day or under makeup?

Absolutely — if you use the right amount.

A few drops can create a smooth, healthy-looking finish and help dry areas look less textured under makeup.

The key is giving the oil time to absorb.

Apply your skincare, press in a small amount of oil and wait a few minutes before moving on to makeup. If your foundation begins sliding or separating, you're probably using more oil than your skin needs.

For daytime wear, remember that facial oil does not replace sunscreen. SPF should still be part of your morning routine.

What should you actually look for in a face oil?

The front of the bottle doesn't tell you much. The ingredient list does.

Look at the botanical oils being used, how the formula feels on the skin, and whether it makes sense for what you're trying to accomplish.

At Golden Phae, we built Restorative Face Oil Plus around botanical oils rather than synthetic fillers. Sea Buckthorn Oil is at the heart of the formula, alongside Japanese Camellia Oil and a blend of carefully selected plant oils and herbs.

Sea Buckthorn is particularly interesting in skincare because it naturally contains carotenoids and a distinctive profile of fatty acids. Japanese Camellia Oil has a much lighter skin feel and has a long history of use in Japanese beauty rituals.

The result is an oil designed to feel nourishing without turning your skincare routine into an oil slick.

So, do you really need a face oil?

Not everyone does.

But if your skin often feels dry, tight or depleted, your moisturizer doesn't quite feel like enough, or you want to add more botanical nourishment to a simple skincare routine, a well-formulated facial oil can make a noticeable difference in how your skin feels and looks.

The trick isn't using more products.

It's choosing the right ones — and knowing how to use them.
